Walsh Construction to Begin Improvements At Chicago's Belmont, Jefferson Park Blue Line Stations

CHICAGO - Walsh Construction joined Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Transit Authority for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of renovations to two Blue Line stations on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

The $17 million Belmont Blue Line renovation project will feature a unique, ascending glass and steel canopy. Designed by Ross Barney Architects, the canopy is meant to serve as a community gateway while visually enhancing the street-level entrance. Other improvements include repaved surfaces, new LED lighting, and new signage to improve the speed of bus boarding.

The $25 million rehabilitation of the Jefferson Park Transit Center will modernize a station that serves 20,000 daily commuters. Newly redesigned canopies will be built for the bus terminal and rail station entryway and will feature improved reconfiguration of the bus bays to accommodate those with disabilities. Other improvements to the station will include rehabbing platform canopies, repairing and repainting exterior station walls, and installation of new benches, windbreaks, and trash bins.

This is the first time the Belmont Blue Line Station has undergone a major renovation since it opened nearly 50 years ago, while Jefferson Park Transit Center gets its first major upgrade since 2001.
